I Shoulda Been a Teacher

"American Bald Eagles"

Last week my photographer BFF asked me if I wanted to go to
Starved Rock with her to take pictures of the "Eagles."
Of course I said yes!

Shes always good for a laugh,
plus I thought I may learn something from her,
since she actually is a photographer,
college degree and all.

FACT: Bald Eagles stand about 3.5 feet tall
FACT: There nests can weigh up to 2,000 pds

The "Whole Eagle Watch" thing starts out in the lodge
with a beautiful buffet lunch.

FACT: The Females wing span is approx 8'
FACT: The Males wing span is approx. 6.5'
FACT: They mate for life! (I respect that in a bird)

Then we all boarded this cute little trolley car
that would take us out to the
viewing area.

FACT: Eagles like to hang out by Dams.
The water rarely freezes there
and they can fish most of the winter.

FACT: The average age on the trolley was 50.
(when did I start riding trolleys with old people?)

If you look real close you can see about 8 Eagles perched
in the tree. Quiet a sight for me, since most of my
life they were on the endangered species list.

FACT: Bald Eagles are thriving in this country due to the
ban on DDT and protection by the Endangered Species act.
DDT is a pesticide that accumulated in eagles and other hawks.
The shells of the eggs became fragile and often cracked,
killing the young.
Bald Eagles have recovered so well
that they are no longer considered Federally Endangered.

Then they took us all downstairs to watch a short educational film.
(Yay Mobil)

FACT:  Those are some big A**  Talons.

The bald eagle was chosen on  June 20, 1782
as the emblem of the United States of America,
because of its long life, great strength and majestic looks.

FACT: The picture above was taken at Starved Rock,
just not by me.

These are the shots I was able to get.
Look close the eagle is there.

 Yep, two of them there.

My friends photography tip for the day?
"Buy a Zoom Lens!"

FACT: shes not my friend anymore.
